Complete Overhaul

We bit off more than we could chew. After 2 weeks of tedious and slow progress, we sat down as a team and talked about how we want our game to progress. In the end we decided to scrap the idea since it was,

  • Too hard to make for our skill set.
  • Too complicated to implement.
  • Too uselessly time consuming.
  • and most importantly, not fun.

The idea was okay, but it surely was not fun. The game was missing a lot of elements while trying to combine both worlds of deck building and Rogue-like mechanics. It was playable but boring.

So we decided to take a step back. A whole walk back actually. And threw the whole design into a trash.

What went not wrong?

Communication. It was our biggest feat. We brainstorm together to create a form of art and we will continue to do so. The learning process was also pretty good. We all have learned a lot. Planning was okay but it could’ve been better.

What went not?

Game was too complicated and a playable prototype came too late. We had no idea how to fix a lot of the problems with design, art and programming. We talked about a lot of ideas but nothing felt right. So we decided to take a step back. We came up with a better design and started all over. Not from scratch though, we didn’t throw away our story and music. Some of the art and design ideas made it to the resurrection as well. It’s looking more promising now.

Everybody is different. When I am making a big project, I usually note all the things I’ll need down and check them off one by one. This is overwhelming for some people. Just iterate slowly and surely, people who think like me should keep the notes separate so that others won’t feel overwhelmed with the project’s needs. Don’t try to teleport to the end of the road it won’t work, you run too fast and you’ll fall, try to take careful steps with the speed you are comfortable with.

What went?

A lot of our progress is gone. The game will not be a top down grid based roguelike now. We want to make a platform game. All members of our team loves platformers and has ideas for them. So we wanted to make this game truly ours by trying to make our own original game. A lot of the art is scrapped. A big chunk of the code is poofed. We are still us though, we are still here and even more excited about our new project!

What?

Don’t worry. We are still trying our best to make this game possible. This is just a minor setback for us. We have learned a lot as individuals and as a team during the development of this game and this game will still be here. We will be updating this page accordingly to match our new project. Which has the same name with the same story.

So, see you in the next update 😄
